A Caterpillar G3516 natural gas generator set. The G3516 is a 16-cylinder spark-ignited gas engine from Caterpillar's 3500 family, used for continuous, prime and standby power at industrial and utility scale.
This is stationary power plant, not portable equipment. The 3500 gas family is what runs cogeneration schemes, landfill and digester gas installations, remote industrial sites and standby capacity for facilities that cannot take an outage. A single electronic control module handles ignition, governing, air-fuel ratio control and engine protection, which is what allows the set to hold emissions and efficiency across a load range rather than at one operating point.
Ratings on the G3516 vary considerably with the build: the aspiration, the speed, the frequency, the gas quality and whether the set is rated for continuous, prime or standby duty all move the number, and installed sets in the field span a wide band of electrical output. The other questions to settle before ordering are gas supply pressure and heat content, because the fuel system is sized against both, and what comes with the set: radiator, control panel, switchgear, exhaust and heat recovery are separate items on a package like this. A set of this size travels as an oversize load, so the routing, the crane and the pad all want settling well before dispatch.
