A Thermo King TriPac Evolution diesel APU, the cab-comfort unit for long-haul tractors. It cools the sleeper with 13,000 BTU of air conditioning and heats it with a 7,500 BTU fuel-fired heater while the main engine stays off.
Overnight idling to keep a sleeper comfortable is expensive in fuel, engine wear and resale value. The TriPac takes over. A small two-cylinder Tier 4 final diesel runs the air conditioning and charges the truck batteries, and a separate fuel-fired heater handles cold nights. Thermo King estimates the unit burns about 75 percent less fuel per hour than an idling tractor, which it works out at roughly 2,500 gallons a year for a typical long-haul truck.
The air conditioning circuit is charged with R-134a when the unit is installed. The Air Tower circulates cab air more effectively and, by Thermo King's figure, cuts APU run time by up to 22 percent. Scheduled maintenance falls every 2,000 hours, usually once a year, which lines up well with the tractor's own service.
Pick the variant to suit where the truck runs. The standard model is a 49-state EPA Tier 4 solution; the model with the passive aftertreatment device is compliant in all 50 states, including California. This listing is priced at $7,500. Serviced and brand-new units both pass through, so ask about the hours on the one you would receive.
