Burying a propane tank is almost always about the view and the space. Once the hole is backfilled, a 250 disappears apart from the dome and lid over its valves, and the lawn, patio or garden goes back to normal use. The soil also shields the tank from direct sun and hard frost.
The vessel measures about 30 in. across and 93 in. long and weighs about 670 lb empty, so the excavation is modest: room for the shell, a bed of clean sand or pea gravel beneath it and the same material around it. Plan for the water table too, since an empty tank in wet ground can try to rise. At 200 gallons usable, it handles loads like a water heater, a range, a dryer or a fireplace, and it is not meant to carry central heating through a long winter.
