Description
A new 500 gallon ASME propane tank finished for burial, with a 5 ft 9-3/8 in. riser bringing the valves, gauge and fill point up to grade. Usable volume is 400 gallons.
The reason to bury a 500 is almost always the view. Above ground, a vessel just under ten feet long has to go somewhere, and screening it with planting takes years. Buried, the lid is all that shows, and the regulator, gauges and fill connection sit under it out of the weather. Frost, wind and summer heat all reach the tank through several feet of soil instead of directly, which steadies vaporisation.
This is the same pressure vessel as the above-ground 500: ASME Section VIII, Division 1, stamped for 250 psig, installed under NFPA 58. What differs is the finish and the fittings. The shell carries a bury-rated coating rather than paint, the riser and dome are fitted, and empty weight goes up to 953 pounds against 920 for the painted version. A sacrificial anode goes in with the tank to protect the coating against soil currents.
Buried tanks want a clean sand or pea gravel bed and the same material as backfill, and the installer has to account for the water table so an empty tank cannot float. Buried vessels are generally held to 10 feet from a building and a property line under NFPA 58, but the authority having jurisdiction may want more. Confirm before the excavator arrives.
