Description
A 250 gallon ASME propane tank, offered in the above-ground build or coated for burial. It holds 200 gallons of propane at a full fill, which is the size normally quoted as a 30-day residential supply.
This is the tank for part-time and secondary loads: a cabin or camp used seasonally, a house where propane backs up another heat source, a pool heater, or a cluster of two or three appliances such as a range, a dryer and a fireplace. It is not sized to carry central heat for a full-size house through a northern winter, and buyers who try usually end up back for a 500.
The vessel is built to ASME Section VIII, Division 1, complies with NFPA 58 and is rated 250 psig from minus 20 to 125 degrees F, with a full vacuum rating. Empty weight is around 670 pounds, and the shell runs about 30 to 31 inches in diameter and up to 94 inches long, so it is light enough that siting is usually about clearances rather than about access.
Under NFPA 58 a container in the 126 to 500 gallon band wants 10 feet from a building and 10 feet from the line of adjoining property. Bear in mind the delivery truck as well: fill hoses run 75 to 100 feet and the driver needs line of sight to the tank. Tanks ship empty; a licensed propane contractor handles the set, the piping and the first fill.
