Think of the 250 as the step up from exchanging cylinders. Homes that run a propane range and a water heater, a weekend cabin, a shop heater or a small café kitchen use enough gas to make bulk delivery worthwhile but not enough to justify a 500. At 200 gallons usable, deliveries come at sensible intervals, and the tank stays small enough to site easily.
The shell is about 30 to 31 in. in diameter and up to 94 in. long, and weighs around 670 lb empty. The above-ground build stands on feet and is painted for weather. The underground build is coated for burial and finished with a dome and lid so the fittings can be reached at grade. Keep in mind the delivery driver's hose run and the clearances your local code requires from buildings and property lines when you pick a spot. The tank ships empty, and a licensed propane technician should make the connection.
