Description
A 53 ft high cube container, new or used from $6,500 — half a foot wider and a foot taller than a marine container, at 3,857 cubic feet. Built for North American rail, not for ocean stacking.
Fifty-three-footers are domestic equipment. They were built for the rail industry at 8 ft 6 in wide rather than the ISO 8 ft, which gains about six inches of interior width across the whole length, and they are high cube by default. That combination gives them the largest interior volume of any container in general circulation.
The trade-off is availability and compatibility. They exist in limited numbers and in limited areas because they were built for specific fleets, they will not mount on a standard marine chassis, and they are not export equipment. As long storage, as a conversion shell or as warehouse-on-a-slab, they are the best cost per cubic foot on the market.
Recorded weights vary by source: tare figures from 10,750 lb to 12,103 lb appear for the container alone, and 19,340 lb with a chassis. Take the CSC plate on the individual unit as authoritative.
