A 500 gallon horizontal ASME propane tank for above-ground installation, 9 ft 11 in. long and 37.5 inches in diameter, holding 400 gallons of propane at a full fill.
Above ground is the straightforward install. The tank sits on its legs a few inches clear of the ground, everything is visible for inspection, the fill point is at a comfortable height, and there is no excavation, bedding, backfill or anode to pay for. If the tank ever has to move, it moves.
Four hundred gallons of usable propane is the standard whole-home charge. An average furnace burns somewhere between 500 and 1,200 gallons a year and an average household spends another 200 to 300 on hot water, so a 500 typically means one or two fills a season rather than a running relationship with the delivery schedule. The same vessel serves small commercial kitchens, greenhouse heat and agricultural drying.
Under NFPA 58 a container in the 126 to 500 gallon band wants 10 feet of clearance from a building and from the line of adjoining property; local fire code can be stricter. Leave the delivery truck a route and a sightline, because fill hoses run 75 to 100 feet. The tank ships empty and the first fill is arranged with a propane supplier in your area.
