Description
A Thermo King TriPac Evolution diesel auxiliary power unit for tractor sleepers: 13,000 BTU of air conditioning, a 7,500 BTU fuel-fired heater and a 65 amp alternator, all without idling the truck engine.
An APU is a small diesel generator and climate package mounted on the tractor. Its job is to keep the cab and sleeper comfortable and the batteries charged overnight without running a 15 litre engine to do it. Idling wears the main engine, adds hours that depress residual value, and burns fuel at a rate an APU does not approach.
The TriPac Evolution uses a two-cylinder Tier 4 final diesel driving a 13,000 BTU air conditioning circuit charged with R-134a, with a separate 7,500 BTU fuel-fired heater and a 65 amp alternator. Automatic start and stop means it only runs when the cab or the batteries need it, and programmable settings let it drop to monitoring battery voltage and coolant temperature on out-of-service days rather than conditioning an empty cab.
Two variants exist. The standard model is a 49-state EPA Tier 4 solution for aftermarket installation. The aftertreatment device model adds a passive filter for 50-state compliance including CARB. Scheduled maintenance falls at 2,000 hours, and the control system is flashloadable with a data logger and 22 alarm codes for diagnosis. Confirm which variant you need against where the truck operates before you order.
