Description
A 250 gallon ASME propane tank in the vertical above-ground configuration, holding 200 gallons of propane at a full fill. Rated 250 psig.
A vertical tank buys back yard. The same 250 gallons that would lie in a horizontal vessel nearly eight feet long stands on a much smaller footprint, which is what makes vertical tanks the answer on a narrow lot, behind a building line, or anywhere the clearance to a structure is easier to satisfy in one direction than in two.
The trade-off is vaporisation. A horizontal tank presents a wide liquid surface to the vapour space, and a vertical one presents a narrower one, so under a heavy continuous draw in cold weather a vertical vessel of the same capacity will not vaporise as freely. For the loads a 250 normally serves, a range, a dryer, a fireplace or a modest heating system, that is rarely the limiting factor. For a large intermittent load such as a generator, size it with your supplier.
The vessel is built to ASME Section VIII, Division 1 and installed under NFPA 58, which puts a tank in this band at 10 feet from a building and from the line of adjoining property. It ships empty and unfilled; the set, the regulator train and the piping are for a licensed propane contractor.
