Description
A four-horse Sundowner gooseneck with a 4 ft short wall and 9 ft longwall, on 7,000 lb axles at a 17,500 lb GVWR — against only 4,200 lb empty.
A 17,500 lb gross rating on a trailer recorded at 4,200 lb empty is an unusually large margin — around thirteen thousand pounds of payload for four horses that will weigh perhaps five. Where most four-horse trailers are specified close to their limit, this one is not, which means it is never working hard.
Construction is steel frame with aluminum skin, which is the combination to inspect most carefully: the two metals corrode at the fasteners where they meet. Interior height is 7 ft, which is 21 hands and suits horses up to roughly 15.2 — measure yours. Four feet of short wall gives a proper dressing room over the neck. Sixteen-inch tires and a spare, manual jack.
